To Move or Not to Move...

Today I had a meeting with Miguel, the owner of The Journal, and he actually presented me with a very interesting proposition to move to a beach about an hour away from Liberia and continue working for the newspaper but as a full-time journalist.

It is a very tempting offer because I will be paid more for approximately the same amount of work that I am doing now. It will be a little more expensive to live on the coast and the particular beach is not exceptionally nice, but it still is a beach.

The problems I have with taking the job is that it would potentially mess up plans to travel to South America after the internship is done. The job is for an indefinite period of time and I have been planning and looking forward to returning to Chile and travelling around the rest of South America for a long time. I also still have my return flight to the U.S. mixed in there in June so it might be alittle difficult to coordinate all this logistically.

I told Miguel that I would think it over and get back to him on Friday. In the meantime, I am asking anyone who checks this blog to get me there opinions on the matter, so please let me know. Thanks!

Mom's probably gonna kill me, but I think that you should go for the job. Youd be making more, you'd be living high on the hog as an expat, and you'd actually get a chance to get to know the country. You can probably postpone your flight for another couple of months, and unless they have your soul, or your hot-babe girlfriend locked in some dungeon somewhere, you can always quit and go travel.

Hmm, as you may have guessed, the previous comment was made by your totally sweet older brother, NOT Jennifer.

ritzy, take the high paying job at the beach, and still leave when you want to. look what working for the man has done to me.

Take the job and tell them that you have a friend who would like a job as well.

Not that I'm your career counselor or anything, but we've talked jobs a lot, yes? You can always leave a job, and it sounds like this will give you good experience AND give you lots of good stories. If it's something you're enjoying, go for it and leave it when it's not working for you anymore.

Plus you're on a beach, man. *Seriously*

Still fighting the good bike fight up here in MN...

Wait, I totally have changed my mind. You should really work the same job for less pay. Afterall, you're just a well-educated gringo. Shit, what has $120k worth of education really given you anyway? Internships are far more noble anyway, think of the indulgences you're getting through your hard work and minimal pay. You should actually probably quit before they try to offer you a raise.

I think this is the gift horse you are not supposed to look in the mouth. I can't see any trojan warriors behind the gnarly teeth of your gift horse, so what the hell, invite it in, take it to your new beach house and give it a tequila. How many chances like this happen to a kid from Iowa?
